Voices and Votes Democracy in America

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit Extended at Washington Public Library

The Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, will remain on display at the Library through March, giving community members additional time to explore the powerful and engaging exhibit. Originally scheduled for a shorter run, the exhibit has been officially extended by the Smithsonian due to strong interest and attendance.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America examines the ongoing story of American democracy, highlighting the people, movements, and debates that have shaped the nation’s civic life. Through interactive displays, historical artifacts, photographs, and multimedia presentations, the exhibit encourages visitors to reflect on the meaning of democracy and the role individuals play in shaping it.

The exhibit traces key moments in U.S. history, from the nation’s founding to modern-day civic engagement, showcasing how diverse voices have influenced elections, public policy, and social change. Rather than focusing solely on political leaders, Voices and Votes emphasizes the power of everyday citizens and their participation in the democratic process.

Library officials say the extension offers an opportunity for more students, families, and community groups to experience the exhibit, especially those who may not have had the chance to visit earlier. In conjunction with the exhibit, the Library may also host related programming such as lectures, discussions, and educational activities designed to deepen understanding of civic responsibility and democratic values.

The Smithsonian Institution’s Traveling Exhibition Service brings world-class exhibitions to communities across the country, making national history and culture accessible at the local level. The extension of Voices and Votes: Democracy in America reflects the exhibit’s relevance and its ability to spark thoughtful conversation.

The exhibit is open to the public during regular Library hours and is free to attend. Visitors are encouraged to stop by before the exhibit closes in March to experience this engaging exploration of America’s democratic journey.
